Welcome to the May 5, 2008 edition of carnival of the localists.

Sara Ost presents Eat the Ugly Apple posted at Sara Ost.

Jessica Jones presents Plenty: An Experiment in Eating Locally posted at Practical Nourishment.

valereee presents Woodstone Creek vodka posted at Cincinnati Locavore, saying, "This microdistilled award-winning vodka is made right here in Cincinnati, and it's excellent! Definitely worth a try if you're in Cincinnati and interesting in drinking more locally!"

valereee presents Sorrel soup posted at Cincinnati Locavore, saying, "Sorrel soup is a traditional spring tonic. It's an item most commonly found at farmers' markets, and it's also easy to grow in much of the country!"

Paula presents "Slate takes on local currencies" posted at Local Preference: I was pretty taken aback to find the issue of local currencies on the radar of a mainstream site like Slate, but things became more clear as I read through the article. The answer from Harford at Slate is, of course, that they don’t, served up with a nice side of “duh.”

That concludes this edition. Submit your blog article to the next edition of carnival of the localists using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page. type ornament

Why local preference?

Consumers around the world are making a shift to locally-sourced purchasing out of a desire for environmental sustainability, community self-reliance and meaningful economic relationships. Local foods, locally-made goods, local banking and investing — even local energy production — are quickly becoming their preferred alternative to a globalized economy.
